The bitch may be taken for a short walk a week or more after whelping and gradually brought back into exercise so that she regains her sylph-like shape. Her feeds should return to normal when the pups have been fully weaned, the aim then being that she should look as fine after the experience of motherhood as she did beforehand.
The pups should be wormed at 5 weeks of age and then again at 7 weeks. Thereafter, it is important to impress upon their owners that worming should be carried out at 6-monthly intervals, either with a preparation prescribed by their veterinary surgeon or with a good proprietary brand. The bitch should also be wormed after whelping as this is a time when the disease Toxocara canis is prevalent.
Finally, you must not neglect to register your little with the appropriate Kennel Club when they are born and to obtain a supply of Pedigree Certificates to complete and present to your buyers. They will be paying for a pure bred dog with an accompanying Certificate of Pedigree, which means that they will be entitled to see the names of the parents, grandparents and great grandparents, not only of the bitch but also of the proud father.
