It is essential not to fall into the trap of feeding a dog at table despite its soulful, pleading expression. By all means, add left-over scraps of meat and vegetables to your dog's dinner, with a little gravy, but cakes and other titbits not only fatten a pet but can result in it becoming a nuisance, pawing for food and attention whenever a plate appears.
The scraps if used wisely can make a useful contribution, providing that they never constitute more than 25% of the total diet. A dog's teeth and digestion will cope with pieces of gristle, tough meat and stale crusts. Fruit and green vegetables are of little value, except to provide roughage, because a dog does not need vitamin C.
