In order to grow into an amenable, well mannered,
housetrained
and obedient adult, a puppy needs to be taught how to be all of
these things. Training begins when you bring your puppy home,
usually at eight weeks of age - see the initial five-week training
plan opposite. Puppies are eager to please but keep training
sessions short so as not to overtax their bodies and brains.
Five Weeks Training Plan
Week 1
-
Teach him to recognize and answer to his name
Begin socializing; accustom him to household sights and sounds -
other pets,
television, washing machine, vacuum cleaner etc.
Handle puppy while he is eating
-
Toilet-train
Week 2
-
Commence collar and leash training
-
Let puppy meet people of all ages, sexes and appearances
-
Begin any behavioral training as necessary, such as toy play-biting
Week 3
Week 4
-
Introduce car travel, ensuring he’s properly secured in a
travel irate
Avoid doing so after feeding, otherwise he may vomit.
-
After being fully vaccinated, begin taking him for short walks close
to home,
day and night, to accustom him to sights and sounds. Also start
going to
puppy classes
Week 5
-
Gradually extend car journeys - but never on warm days as
cars soon get
too hot for dogs
-
Begin basic training for obedience and manners in short
five-minute spells, as puppies have a limited attention span and
tire quickly.
-
End sessions on a positive note, even if it means going back a step.
