This is another way of permanently identifying your puppy. A number is stamped on the inside of the ear and your details entered onto a database. As with micro chipping, some dogs find this more painful than others, depending on skin sensitivity and thickness.

• Can look unsightly on pricked ear breeds

• If a tattoo register goes out of business, the tattoo can be meaningless since the database may no longer operate
